Review 07 - Arthi & Amritha (Bhavanites, STD IVB & IIF- Kuwait)
An exciting Family getaway trip with white-water rafting in Sri Lanka.
Review for Miracle Sri Lanka
Our Parents had arranged us a week break in the lap of the Indian Ocean & the Paradise landscapes in the south west wet zones of Srilanka. We landed at 8 pm at Colombo airport. We were on our way to India for our summer vacation from Kuwait this July. For Indians, there is no visa requirement and we came out of emigration folks in a few minutes without frills - Thanks to the SAARC countries relation and agreement.
Mr Ashad, owner of ‘Miracle Srilanka’ and tour organizer received us with orchid garlands and their traditional greeting ‘Ayubowan’ meaning ‘may you have the gift of long life’. Uncle guided us to keep major luggage at airport cloak room and we relaxed the night at a beach side hotel in Negombo. We woke up with the sound of roaring waves and strolled the breezy beach. We were fresh to head for Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage in his saloon car by 9am.
A crowd of 81 Elephants walking & bathing on the river was a wonderful sight. Uncle was helpful and guided us to get ticket privileges which Indians can avail at the counter. My dad felt that the electric cables crossing the street where Elephants roam should be higher. The Elephants are well accustomed with the street, the river Maha Oya and their daily routine. Humidity raised and we started to cool Kandy. We missed a photo shot with two full grown porcupines, belt knotted at the town entry as we were in a hurry heading to Kandy.
Kandy received us with showers and we lodged at a riverside stay hotel. The view from our room’s back door was awesome. Mahaweli river was flowing with murky water and there we had the first sight of a 1.5m long ‘water monitor lizard’ swimming straight under our room. We first mistook it for a snake when it was inside the water. Kandy cultural dance show and lake view delighted us that night. Next morning we stepped into Amith Gems Lapidary where we got exposed to Gem science where families of Gems and real models of natural mines were on display. Our dad bought us some garnet stones and we quickly headed to Peradeniya Botanical Garden. Stunning collections of Orchids, high trees and the greenery of lawns are still inside our minds. We got tired after the long ring walk in the Garden and had to relax for an hour in our room.
At noon, uncle drove his saloon to NuwaraEliya. On the way, he showed us tumbling natural waterfalls whose snap shots will definitely be your favourite screen savers. We reached NuwaraEliya, dropped things at the Guest house and headed to a place called ‘New Zealand’ or Ambewela farms where there were dairy farms. It was lush green everywhere with meadows, terrace farms, rainbows and scenic views. Avatar -2 can be recommended to be shot here on this pristine environment. The vegetation was bursting with chlorophyll and the reason may be its less population.
Next morning we rounded the town and lake and quickly headed to Kitulgala White Water River Rapids ride on the river Kelani. Our dad arranged an extra captain for our raft and our adventure picked up. Beyond words was our enjoyment on the raft. For a thrilling few seconds, your 6 man raft passes the 4 river hurdles at the mercy of rapids. The adventure ended with a serene float and swim in the chill river looking at the sky and the green shrouded rainforests on the river sides. Landing from raft safely, one would agree that they are very experienced captains.
After a couple of hours drive, we reached Hotel Ceysands at Bentota, a lagoon entrance hotel by boat from jetty. The Hotel had proximity of a beach and pool on one side and a river plus lagoon on rear side. The water sports in lagoon and the pool dip were marvellous. The motor boat ride on the river into the silent mangroves helped us to spot few ‘water monitors’. A meter long iguana was freely feeding around our room in the resort. 2 nights at Bentota was relaxing with yummy Grill fish, shell fish and variety of fruits. Red, yellow ramputan fruits were of honey taste. We headed to Colombo ending our tour with cheap garments and sapphire purchases. Uncle Ashad was very attentive and the trip was very worth the money we spent. We reserved uncle Ashad to take us to Nilaveli beach and marine safaris in the 2011 summer break and departed the beautiful verdant island.
Highly recommended!
